ITEMS OF PUBLIC INTEREST AVHERE THE AIONEY GOES. [Special to “Times.”] WELLINGTON, July 8. The usual contribution of £3OOO is to bo voted for the New Zealand University. The amount for payment of members of both Houses ‘is £28,500, the amount expended last year being £29,407. The salary of tho High Commissioner is , setdown at £2OOO. The annual contribution to the Civil Service Superannuation fund is £20,000. Tho salaries of the Judge and members of tho Arbitration Court is set down at £2BOO. The printing of Hansard last year cost £sloC.m The £IO,OOO subsidy to the Canadian Steam Trade Service is to be renewed. The expenses in connection with the Irish International Exhibition last year were £1205. Another £IOO is to voted. On tho Frauco-British Exhibition £3765 was expended and another £3500 is to he voted. The following are items of general interest: Tourist Department—Advertising and purchase of books, photographs, pictures, distribution of pamphlets, books, etc., £5000; compensation to relatives of men accidentally drowned at Alt. Cook hermitage £200; importation and distribution of game and fish £SOO.

Public Buildings—Government House, Auckland, £6OO, Parliament Buildings £2500, temporary residence for the Governor and staff £2800; Departmental buildings £8500; expenses general election £20,000; licensing poll £10,000; preparing and printing rolls £9503. The entertainment of the guests at the Christchurch Exhibition cost £541. £IOO is to be voted for transhipping huia ..birds from the mainland to Barrier Island. £7730 is to be voted -for New Zealand’s portion of the estimated deficiency in the Pacific cable. The cost to the Dominion last session was- £6103. The Dominion Day medals for school children cost £IOOO. £SOOO is to be voted for, the Seddon memorial (cost of grave and monuments). £looo is to be voted for travelling allowance of Alinisters and- £1250 for their travelling expenses. £1250 is also provided for travelling allowances and expenses of private secretaries to Afiliisters. £15,000 is to be voted for the recent Easter volunteer manoeuvres.

Amongst tlie defence items are ordenance ammunition £IO,OOO, small arms ammunition and cordite £2OOOO. Ordinary expenses on Government steamers are sot down at £IB,OOO. The expenses of the training ship Amokura last year were £5240. £•5200 is to be voted this year. A vote of £25.(300 is to be taken for grass seed for Crown lands and settlers. Grants to university colleges for speeilisation. viz. Auckland University College in commerce mid mining £2OOO, Victoria College, law and science, £2.000, Canterbury College, engineering, £2OOO, Otago University, mining, medicine, dental and veterinary science, £2,300. Sir Geo. Gray scholarships, one to each university college (science) £2OO. Research scholarships, including fees, material, apparatus, travelling expenses, etc.. £6oo'. The enquiry at tlie Te Oranga Home cost- £285. £20,000 is set down for development of State coal mines; Other State items are as follows:—Establishment and maintenance of depots Christchurch £7OOO, Dunedin £3OOO, Wanganui £3OOO, Wellington £9OOO. Extension of railway at- Point Elizabeth Colliery £30,000. Houses for employees, building expenses £IOOO, payment of 'loyalty to the Grevmoutli Harbor Board on State coal sold to the public £2333, Point Elizabeth Colliery expenses £190,000. Postages and telegrams £500.. printing and stationery £3OO, purchase of:firewood and necessities incidental to worldlier of depots £SOOO, Scddonvilje collierv expenses £50,000, Workmen's Institute RunangadElOO.
