GISBORNE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

’ > .MONTHLY MEETING., . Tho usual monthly meeting of the G 'oborno richool Committee was held last night. Present: Messrs John .Somervell (chairman), G. Sawyer, A. Spence, G. E. Darton, F. AV; Riuch, Revs. L. Dawson Thomas .mid AVm. Grant, and Mr. A\ r . 1.. File (secretary). Mr. F. -J . Rowley was' also in attendance, arid an apology lor non-attendance was rucoivod from the Rev. C. Griffin. The secretary read tlio minutes of the last meeting, which were confirmed. . A loiter was received from the Hawke's Bay 'Education ißoard notifying the appointment of Miss C. King as eighth assistant in the Gisborne Public School, and also that of M iss J. .Brown as ninth assistant. Dir. E. J. Rowley presented his monthly report. The report showed that the average attendance for the quarter just closed had been: Primary department 771, secondary department 54 ; total 825. The average roll has been 850.8 and 57.3 respectively ; total 908.1 ;and tho percentage of attendance 90.0 and 93.0; total 90.8. The present roll number is 903. During the month the school was visited by Mr. Isaac, Inspector of Manual and Technical Classes; and also by Mr. Gill. Inspector of Secondary Schools. The Board's painters have been at work -for the past three weeks, and have been engaged in painting the outer walls of all the school buildings and outhouses. The school swimming bath is now almost completed, the only work remaining to he done being the painting of the sheds and the asphalting of tho surroundings. The Visiting Committee presented their report, and recommended several min-biY repairs which were required in tho school outbuildings and surroundings. ■ Mr. Rowley said the painters were being .hindered in their work by several of these necessary improvements not being done, and on the motion of Rev. AVm. Grant; seconded by Mr. Darton, it was decided to have the repairs "as notified, in tho report effected at once.'

Messrs Rowley, Darton, and the chairman were appointed a sub-com-mittee to attend to the matter of having the tank in the school grounds filled in immediately. - A circular was received from the Nelson School Committee regarding the deprivation of School Committees of their authority by the Education Boards, and criticising the judgment of the Appeal Court. —It was decided to hold the matter over until *mxt meeting. The nominations for the vacancies on the Hawke’s Bay Education Board were mentioned, and Mr. W. Morgan, the retiring member, was unanimously nominated as member for the North AVard.The Rev. L. Dawson Thomas and Messrs A. Spence and G. AA’ildish were appointed the. A’isiting Committee for the ensuing month. Accounts amounting to £2O 4 s lOd were passed for payment, and tho meeting concluded.
