MANAWATU V. ILOROAVHENUA. [Press Association.] PALMERSTON N., June 21. [n fho match yesterday, Manawalu v. Horowhcnun, the latter team won by 10 to 3. THE ANGLO-WELSH TOUR. A BRITISH VICTORY. NELSON AND MARLBOROUGH DEFEATED. [Pniiss Association.] NELSON,: Juno 20. Tho Anglo-Wejsh team played the Combined Nelson ami Marlborough representatives here, to-day in glorious weather. The ground was in splendid condition, and the attendance was 5000. The game was a very good exhibition of Rugby pin veil under excellent spirit, no rough play or any untoward incident occurring during the game. • Jn the first spell tho local forwards fairly held their own, and in consequence, lor the greater part of the spell, play was in British territory. The local backs were wanting in scoring powor, anil the defence of tlie British backs was so sound that though fully half the play was about the British twenty-five flag the Nelson team was unable to score, and the spell euded with no score on either side.
The second spell saw a different complexion put on the. game, the previous efforts of the Nelson vanguard apparently having told. The British forwards almost invariably secured tho ball in the scrums, coring out smartly. The halves fed the threequarter Jinc (Gibbs, iUoEvedy, Polity Jones and J. L. AVillianis), who got off some splendid passing rushes. Nelson. however, put up such a good defence .that fifteen minutes passed before J. ,L. AVillianis scored. Gibbs took the kick, but failed. Tho home team responded with some good work, and Tuan Jones secured a good opening and passed to J. F. AVillianis, who scored. Jackson failed at goal. Soon after, Polity Jones secured a mark right in front of the posts, anil Jack-son kicked a pretty goal. Nelson attacked, hut the British ilefence was impregnable. -The: British forwards were now forcing the game, and from a throw-in Polity Jones secured the hall anil ran right through tlie opposite hacks. Jackson again failed with the kick at a. moderate angle. Shortly after time was called, the game ending: Britain 12, Nelson and Marlborough nil.
The visitors leave tins evening for AA’ellington after being entertained by the local Rugby Union.
