NEW ZEALAND INDUSTRIES
HELPING 0 ÜBiSELVES. Some months ago a lady bought an article here in Oliristchurch (says the Lyttelton “Times”). It was imported. It cost her 80s. -Silto thought lito price rather high, so ior the sake of information, s he traced Hie reason of that 30s, with the following result Os was the retailer’s profit, the wholesale house who imported it made 2s 6d each on the line, 8s went in' preferential duty, sea freight and other needless charges, thus leaving I3s 0(1 as the English cost. (Not a penny went to Now Zealand .producers or imainifaoturers). A few shillings was paid -to,m-widow who hod to work fourteen hours a day in a ‘London slum for it, the balance went into the pocket of a rich merchant. He had hut recently taken up some .German Government bonds to .provide more money for increasing the German, navy as a menace to British trade, butthis’jby the way. .Wanting a similar 'article again recently, this lady bought a colonialmade one for the same price, and on again analysing the cost, was amazed at the result. Here it is:—As before 6s went to the retailer to cover wages, etc., and 2s 6d to tlhe wholesi.le house hut 14s went to the manufacturer for cost of material, wages, etc, (the lady had two.daugb tors at the very factory that made these goods), then 7s 6d went for wool into Hie pocket of a thrifty New Zealand: farmer who employed many hands. Owing to tho better prices prevailing through tlhe competition of the Now-Zealand mills, who are now by far tho largest buyers at the local wool sales, he had been •able to pay off .the mortgage on- his property. iHe is now- bringing up a family of seven sturdy young colonials who in turn will he consumers of our products. •Moral.—By buying dominion goods you help to keep yourself, your relatives and friends in constant employment. DO YOTJIt PART.
