THURSDAY COMPETITIONS.
GISBORNE 8 V. ALHAAIBHA 3. These teams met on No. 2 ground on Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon in tlio Thursday, competition for Air. W. D. Lysnar’s banner. The weather was glorious, although a trifle warm for football. Tho recent rain had made-the ground' rather sticky, and tho ball, becoming somewhat greasy, rendered accurate passing at times difficult. There was only a moderate attendance of'spectators,' and lieithor of tlio four teams wore at full strength. Alhambra won tlio toss, and Gisborne attacked the western goal, Tlio first spell was fairlv oven ,aml play was chiefly confined to tbo forwards. From a loose forward rush of tbo “stripes” vanguard, West scored. Tate took the kick at goal but failed, ami half-time sounded shortly afterwards. Alhambra 3, Gisborne-nil. In the second half the game livened up considerably, and Gisborne pressed hard. Several fine .chances of scoring wero missed through faulty handling by some of tho backs, but eventually Alorse got over near . the corner. Scott failed with tho kick. Gisborne 3, Alhnmbra 3. The “Royals” continued to havo much the beet of the play, and their backs got going nicely several times'.: From some loose play in midfield, Thompson obtained, and after boating tbo opposing'backs scored an excellent try. He took the kick himself, and landed a good goal. No further scoring took place, and the whistle finally sounded with the scores—Gisborne 8, Alhambra. 3. For Gisborne, Austen, Thompson, and McLachlaii in the hacks, and Scott, Seymour, and Fox of the forwards'played best. Tate and Campbell wore the best of the. Alhambra backs, and West and Crosbio were tbo nick of the forward division. Air. E. Foaton was referee.
STAR 8 V. CITY 0. At the conclusion of the GisbdrneAllinmbra match these teams took the field. Tlio game was a much more interesting one, than that preceding, and come really pretty passing bouts were indulged-in by the Star backs. As in the other game, play was even for tlio first half, and tlio teams crossed over with no scoro -having been registered. The Star backs were nearly in on several occasions, and at last Clark crossed the line near the corner, and ran round, grounding the ball behind the posts. Ivokiri took the kick at- goal, but went too far out, and the ball fell short. Star 3, City 0. Gitv now attacked strongly, and looked very like scoring, but ovorengerness. spoiled their chances. Knipnrn received a pass in bis own twen-tv-five. and made a strong-run down the. field. He beat opponent after opponent, and. finally feinting to pass scored a brilliant try between the lKiefs. Burke added t-lie extra points. With only a few minutes to go the City men made desperate efforts, lint to no purpose, and time was called with the scores—Star 8. City 0. Knipara was easily the best backon tiie field, and showed groat dash and brilliancy. Clark also played a good game, and Wilkinson and Nicolas were about the pick of the forward division. For the. losers H. Puflett, Cramp, and Taylor in tlie backs were probably the best, and the forwards wero all fairly equal. AIK, AI. H. Walker controlled the game.
ADMISSION TO. TEST MATCHES'.
(Press Association.) AAIBLLINGTON, Julio 11. Mr. Galbraith, treasurer . of . the Now Zealand Rugby Union, has made a statement, .partly as an explanation of the two shilling charge by the Union for admission to the test matches. Tlio trip of -the British team, he said, will cost lias Union £7OOO, and to recoup this it will be necessary to receive £4OO from each of the 17 matches to be played in the Dominion. As the smaller matches will not nearly net that amount, the strain will partly ha ve to be Horne by the gates in. tlie test matches and the Wellington- and Auckland contests. As to the present financial position of the Union, the capital now in band only brings in sufficient revenue to meet the Union’s working expenses. The Union intends that the British team will pay its way. There would he no need for a two shilling charge so long as tlie Union could- maintain sufficient reserve for working expenses. It would bo quite prepared to divide among affiliated Unions any profits arising out of the projected tour in Australia. .... ■
