HAWKE’S BAY EDUCATION BOARD.

AIONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board was held at Napier last Tuesday. ; The chairman reported that Miss JeSsie Higgins, assistant, Alakaun, had resigned. . " Amongst other recommendations ot tho Building and Finance Committee the following were dealt with: —- Haiti: £4 5s granted for roof drainage. Schedule of works approved. Makauri: £5 granted for improvements. Shelter shed refused. Alatawhero.—Application for addition refused. Several other requirements to be attended to. Tokomaru Bay : Application for special grant on completed improvements refused with regret. Steps to be taken, if possible, to have teacher admitted to tho Training School. On the recommendation, of a subcommittee, the following votes were passed for the shelter sheds at the places named : Napier Alain, £IOO for four sheds; Napier South, £25 for one ; Patutahi, £lO for ono; Taradale, £ls for ono; Waerenga-a-hika, £lO for one; Makaraka, £ls for ono; Dannevirke South, £SO for two. Tho Education Department intimated that they had granted £76 18s 6d for plumbing apparatus at Hastings and, £l6 18s for rent at Kaitaratahi, but refused 'to increase the grant, for Pulia. —It was decided to av© plane prepared for- a school at Puha, 36ft by 24ft. „ The holding of a -winter school as suggested by*the Teachers’ Institute Was approved, a full report on the necessary arrangements to be suib mitted at next meeting by Inspector Hill and the secretary. ■ To Arai School Committeo reported on their inquiry into an alleged case of undue corporal punishment in their school. They had decided unanimously that the injury to the native boy’s hand and the breaking of one of his fingers had not been caused by the punishment inflicted by the teacher.—No further action to be taken. _ ~. J. G. Dow, of Gisborne, offered his services as truant officer. , Inspector Hill to report at next meeting on the whole question of truancy and nonattendance. ~ Mr Tanner gave notice that at next meeting ho would move, "That the first part of Regulation 15 be altered, to read as follows: The teaching in the schools shall be for 24J hours every week, but not to exceed' five hours on apy ono day, except that in the preparatory classes it shall be for 20 hours only.” A vote of condolence was passed with the relatives of’the late Air.
