HOME FOR GIRLS.
SALVATION ARMY 1 INSTITUTION. OFFICIAL OPENING. (Press Association.) DUNEDIN, June 10. Tho official opening of tho Salvation Army Home for Girls at Middlemarch took place to-day. The Home was the property of the late Air. Gillies, from whose executors it was bought a few months ago by Colonel Knight on behalf of Commissioner McKie for £1750. Tho purchase money was raised by general subscription, the sum in hand at present amounting to something like £3OO. The Home, which is situated within easy distance of the railway, has an orchard and 1,7 acres of land, stables, etc. It will be used for the rearing of destitute or neglected children and children will be received from parents who are not able to look after their offspring, but who are willing to papr for their maintenance. The Home is for girls only. At the end of the week there will be 14 inmates, but there is room for 35. Some have been transferred from the Wellington Home. The ages, of the girls range from three to thirteen. Seventeen will be the age limit. The officer in charge is Adjutant Woodford, who, is assisted by Adjutant Burgess, Ensign Humphries, and Captain Coombs. The house has eleven large airy rooms, each of which has a fireplace, and is lighted with acetylene gas,. A fine ■water supply is also provided. The Home was officially opened by Air.’ D. Reid, AI.P., and speeches were also delivered by the Rev. W. Saunders, Colonel Knight, and. Airs Colonel Fisher.
