ACCIDENT ON STEAMER.

AN ENGINEER INJURED. Yesterday morning, about half-past eleven, the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s steamer Matatua, bound from, Auckland to Wellington to discharge cargo, hove-to in the bay arid signalled for medical assistance. Dr. Williams wars immediately sent for, and was taken out to the vessel in the Harbor Board’s launch. An examination of the injured man showed that his face and head were cut and bruised, and that lie was suffering from concussion of Dr. Williams advised the removal of the sufferer, who was in a semi-uncon-scious state, to the hospital, and ho was accordingly brought ashore in the launch, and was conveyed to the hospital by John Maher and Frederick Steele.

A “Times” reporter went out to the Matatua, and ascertained from the commander, Captqin Maxwell, particulars of the accident. Tho injured man is Robert Galway, gixtli engineer, and it appears that about I ii.m. yesterday morning, as tho vessel was off tho East Cape, lie was found lying in a state of semi-uncon-sciousness on tho ’tween deck just aft of the cross bunker. Ho received immediate' attention from the officers, and everything was done that was possible. His condition was so serious, however, that Captain Maxwell deemed it advisablo that tho sufferer should received medical attention as soon as possible, and lie therefore called in here., It was impossible, of course, to ascertain the cause of the accident from Galway himself, but it is surmised he missed bis footing and fell from the deck above. . Dr. Williams states that Galway’s injuries are fairly serious, hut the greatest danger is to be feared from the subsequent results.
