THE DRAINAGE QUESTION.
AIR. JICKELL’S ENGAGEMENT. Following are copies of the telegrams forwarded by the Mayor and the replies received in connection with the engagement of Air. Jickell to report oil the drainage of Gisborne : The Alayor telegraphed to Mr. Jickell as follows:—“It has been suggested to nfo that you are not a qualified engineer and did not design the Palmerston drainage scheme. Kindly wire mo a prompt reply to-day to these two questions.” Air. Jickell replied: “Suggestions false, probably malicious. Qualification highest, Institute Civil Engineers,Royal Sanitary Institute. Scheme hero altered by me, original tanks and filters' defective. All practically •my own, and additional £20,000 wholly eo. Will give you particulars. Arrive Wednesday Gisborne.” The Mayor also sent the following wire to the Alayor of Palmerston North:—-“Would be obliged if you would wire me to-day answer the following questions: First, did S. Jickell design and carry through Palmerston’s 'drainage scheme, and do you regard him as capable engineer to advise this town on drainage question ; second, is your drainage scheme giving satisfaction ” Air. Nash’s reply was: “When Jickell was appointed scheme already adopted by Council, but not carried through very satisfactorily. Consider him fully competent advise on any drainage question. Our drainage scheme giving satisfaction Borough and Health Department.” Ilie Alayor _ sent the following wiro to Captain Preece, at Palmerston (formerly Magistrate at Gisborne) : “Kindly wire ’mo your personal opinion to-day on following questions: Is your drainage scheme at I almerston giving satisfaction, and do you regard S. Jickell a capable engineer on question of drainageP” The reply was: Drainage giving satisfaction in itself, but found abattoir should have separate drainage, as acid- in blood alfects sewerage matter m septic tanks. Considered Jickell capable mail.” The Alayor said ho had wired to the agent for the N.Z. Loan Co. at Palmerston North as follows: “Would bo ooliged if you would wire me your personal opinion whether the i drainage - scheme is giving satisfaction, and if you regard S. Jickell as capable engineer on drainage question.” Mr. Mac Knight replied: “So far a--1 know scheme success. Jickell very capable man.” The Alayor added lid had also wired to Jr. Alason, but had obtained no reply. AIR. JICKELL ARRIVES. Air. S Jickell arrived in Gisborne irom Palmerston North by the Alonowai last evening.
