On the first page of To Hipiwharaiiroa, the Maori journal published in this town, and on its billheads as well, is printed the following wellknown Alaori proverb: lie no to rang! ka whin, He huruhuru tc nianu ka rore. Or — Without clouds the heavens cannot be covered. And without feathers a- bird ennnot ' flyThe Baying ought to appeal to the natives, among whom many papers have been started, and have come to an untimely end, and it is an appropriate motto for the sturdy little paper which bears the name of one of the national birds the Maori —the shining cuckoo.*" 1 The mottodoes not express the policy of the papor, but rather its needs. Te Ripiwharauroa. i:; pissing through its tenth year.
