FOOTBALL.
P.B. RUGBY UNION. The usual weekly meeting of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union was held last night in the Masonic Hotel. Present: Messrs IT. E. Maude (chairman) G. K. Pasley, L. O. Ingram, J. A. Eaton, J. S. Waucliop, W. Johnston, H. Bright, L. Slienilf, J). E. Dustin, C. Morse, and E. L. Maude (bon. see.) The minutes of tiie previous meeting luivingbeen read and confirmed,tho tenders for tiie proposed new gates at tho Domain were discussed, and oil tiie motion of Mr. 11. Bright, it was resolved that, the tender of Alessrs Evans, Niekl and Co. at £4O be accepted. CORRESPONDENCE.
A letter was received from the Referees’ Association, regarding the amount of expenses allowed them by the Union.—lt was decided to ask the Association to supply a detailed list of last year’s expenditure as a guide, when the Union would act in the matter.
Tho Hockey Association wrote thanking the Union for the use of the ground for the ladies’ hockey teams. —ReceivedA letter was received from the secretary of the New Zealand Rugby Union, regarding the visit of the British team and referring to the ground accommodation and admission charges • —Received. The committee appointed to meet the Cricket Association regarding the fences on the far side of the ground banded in their report.—lt was resolved that the suggestion contained iu tho report be adopted—that, temporary posts be erected along the ground and rope be l'un along the tops. The Gisborne Times Co., Ltd., wrote regarding the printing . of weekly programmes of the ‘matches, and it was decided to give such programmes official - sanction: A-, ■ It was resolved that the grant of £lO towards school football be expended by purchasing footballs for each school team in tin: district. The offer of Mr. AV.-D. Lysnar to donate a bnnnet dor competition among the Thursday players was received with thanks, and Messrs Dustin, Morse, Ingram, and Puflett were appointed to wait upon Mr. Lysnar in the matter. GENERAL.
Several additional players were added to the lists of the different clubs. / - -A The Saturday representative team as handed in by the selectors was adopted, and the appointment of Air. G. Rowe as captain was confirmed. Air. J. S. Thompson was appointed captain of the Thursday representatives. AVitli regard to the AA’est End player who was ordered off the field for 'cavilling at tho referee’s decision, it was decided to suspend the player in question for two playing Saturdays. It was further decided that the referees in future attend the -meetings of tho Union to report any breaches, and also to forward tho names of any players who, in their opinion, have been guilty of rough play. AVitli regard to a training shed for the players chosen to go into training for the British match, the Chairman said that the only place so far available was tbe Drillshed. Messrs Pasley, Dustin, Eaton, and Aforse were appointed a committee to draft an entertainment progi amine in connection with tho British team’s visit.
It was decided, on the motion of the lion, sec., that no spectators be allowed inside the enclosure during the progress of all games being played there, and that notices to this effect be posted in conspicuous places on tiie ground, all persons offending against the rule to bo removed from the ground. Messrs H. E. Maude and L. 11. Sherriff were appointed a nub-com-mittee to attend to the matter ol the erection of the fence on the further side of the ground. . It was resolved to invite Air. G. Jl. Lusk, who represents the Union oil the N.Z.R.U., to attend the British match as the guest of the Union. It was also decided that a tabic be provided on the ground for the use of the press. The meeting terminated ill the usual manner 1 shortly before 10o’clock. TEST MATCH CHARGES.
Press Association, AVEIiL.INCiTON, June 1. The Management Committee of tlie New Zealand Rugby Union lias replied as follows to Dunedin’s protest against the charge of two shillings at the test match next Saturday: “Alter lullv considering the matter, the committee still consider the charges reasonable in view of the importance ol the occasion and the additional expense of a test match. The charges are the same as the test match pi 1904. On the suggestion of several Unions the charges at their local matches had been fixed at two shillings. Wo would emphasise the fact that the profits will he divided aipong the affiliated Unions, this Union not sharing. In view of these facts, ami in fairness to the other Unions, wo cannot now alter the charges,« DUNEDIN, June I • The Mayor (Mr. J. McDonald) this morning wired to the Secretary of the New Zealand Union, protesting against the minimum charge of 2s for admission to the grounds next Saturday ami asking that the amount be reduced to Is. His Worship intimated that in the event ol the request being refused it was probable that an indignation meeting of citizens wouki he held. Yesterday the Hon. J . A. Millar 'sent a lengthy telegram to the Utago delegates on tlie New Zealand Union (Messrs R, D. Isaacs aiid Laurensan), and put the , position very strongly,
urging that Llio public ought to have the right of- admission lor one shilling. Late this afternoon tho Minister received a joint reply irom Messrs Ignites and Laurenson: “Committee reconsidered matter; cannot see their way. to alter charges.” 1 At a meeting of the Otago Rugby Football Union this evening, the (jiiestiou of the charge came up for consideration, and after a discussion, unanimous as ip the need lor protest, the following motion was moved by Mr (I. McLaren, and seconded by Mr W. J. Wilson, “That tho New Zealand Rugby Union be infonnotl that the feeling of both the committee and the public "is so strong that unless tho union reduces the ground entrance! charge this committee will consider the advisability of declining to take control of tho match. The Maori footballers will play the Northern Union game during their Liiiti* in New South Wales. After witnessing a couple of matches and themselves practising the new Rugby game the team took a vote, which favored the new game in plane of Rugby. The R ngliy League lias determined to countenance no other style, and any team visiting tile State under the League's auspices will be expected to abide by that decision.
