AN ANAESTHETIC FATALITY
YOUNG MAN DIES JN DUNEDIN/
(Press Association.) . -- -DUNEDIN, May 31. Peter Paxton, a tram conductor, aged 28, died at the hospital yesterday while under the influence of an anaesthetic preparatory to undergoing aii operation. Dr. Ritebie said he administered to deceased a- mixture of chloroform’ and ether after examining him and finding him fit for the anaesthetic, which was necessary for the serious operation deceased had to undergo. Deceased took the anaesthetic, but suddenly became faint, dying shortly afterwards. The doctor’s opinion was that death was duo to heart failure, following septic absorption from empyema accelerated bv the anaesthetic. Drs. Falconer and Ritchie agreed as to the cause of death, and also stated that the operation .was absolutely necessary. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony, adding that no blame was attachable to anyone.
