CHRISTCHURCH SHOOTING AFFRAY.
ACCUSED BEFORE THE COURT. IMPRISONMENT FOR LIFE, Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, May 20. Frederick Hall was inflicted for, that on March 7th, 1908, at Lyttelton, he fired a loaded revolver at Alex. J. Muir, thereby attempting to commit murder. The man ,was also charged with shooting Muir so as to cause him actual bodily harm, and with atempting to discharge a loaded revolver at Constable Moriarty, with attempt to prevent his lawful apprehension. The charge was the outcome of the shooting case at Lyttelton, when Hall put two revolver shots into Muir, and attempted to fire at the arresting constable, but the revolver did not go off. Accused had been committed for trial. The Judge said the offence was a direct and distinct attempt to murder, and if Muir had died, the accused would have been condemned to death. He could not see the slightest grounds for the mitigation of the penalty;and that being so he thought it was his duty to impose the most severe penalty the law allowed. The prisoner would be sentenced to imprisonment for life.
