A VISIT TO PATUTAHI.

MR. MASSEY WELCOMED. Messrs Massey and Herries had somewhat of an experience when being driven out to meet the settlers at Patutahi yesterday by Mr. W. L. Clayton. When opposite Nelson Bros.’ freezing-works the motor-car broke down. On being appealed to, Mr. C. Fenwick, of Messrs Nelson Bros., came to the rescue with a pair of pomes and a. buggy, and landed the party at their destination in time for lunch. Among the settlors prosent to meet tile visitors were •Messrs Tuoliy, Sherratt, W. Smithy Bilham, W. Tombleson, Habgod, Knight, Bruce, and others. After lunch, Mr. Tuohy proposed tlio health of Messrs Massey and Merries, lie gave them, on behalf of the residents, a hearty welcome to the district, and trusted that though that was the first visit Mr. Massey had paid them it would not be the last. Mr Massey, in responding remarked that lie had been greatly struck with, the district, and had seen nothing better than the Poverty Bay flats in the whole of his jourueyings through the Dominion.

Mr. Herries stated that it was Ins duty, as representing a neighboring constituency, to visit and make himself acquainted with the requirements of their district.' He would not be a candidate for the Bay of Plenty seat at the next election. Owing to tho alteration of electoral boundaries, ho would stand for the Tatiranga seat. At the same time, if returned, he would consider himself an East Coast member, and would join heartily with the members for Bay of Plenty and Waiapu in pushing the district ahead The party left for town, amid cheers, in Mr. W. R. Barker’s fine Argyll car, which ho had taken out on learning of the breakdown.
