Dr. Findlay s visit here is on matters connected with tho business of his Department, lie had intended to return by to-night s steamer, .but found he could not completo liis business in tinu> aml will accoidingly leave lor Wellington on'Monday evening. , . ~ • Speaking with regard to the nvam trunk works over which ho had recently passed, Dr. Findlay informed a “Truth” representative that tho work was being carried on apparently , w ith tho utmost expedition, and the Minister for Public Works seemed satisfied that tho trains would bo running night through to Auckland ],v tho cud of the year. “The route from Tauiuaranui to Ohakuno,” continued Dr Findlay, “presents some or tho most picturesque views in the North Island and.both tlio Minister for Public Works and myself were impressed with the advisability of trying to preserve some of the best, scenic beauties in tho forest along the line. The line has already produced ft good deal of settlement and djiouikl that tlio settlers, although thoir conditions were pretty hard, wore exceedingly cheerful and hopeful regarding tho future. There is no doubt the high lauds-are not very rich at present. They mainly carry nine forest, but a great deal of the lower lands along tlio route would be suitable for almost any kind of (farming. A .great deal o:f it is like the land about Taiha.pe.” Referring to the issue of the compiled statutes. Dr Findlay said - he thought the statutes would be ready for issuo this year and .the -whole of the New Zealand statutes would bo available in five handy volumes by the end of tho session. The work would bo really a great achievement and would be of immense convenience both to tho -professions and the public.
