MAYORAL ELECTIONS. DR. WILLIAMS TOTILL ADDRESS THE ELECTORS In yjIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE, On fjHIESDAY JgVENING J^EXT, , APRIL 28tli, At 8 O’CLOCK. Gluiinaan: liis Worship the Mayor.
MAYORAL ELECTION. TO THE BURGESSES OF THE BOROUGH OF GISBORNE, jjADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— 111 response to tlio request of a largo number of ratepayers, I beg to offer you my services as Mayor during the coming year. My views generally on Municipal matters aro strongly progressive. The most important Cjuestion at present before the Council is that or sanitation, in which I take a veiy keen interest. I am earnestly desirous of initiating a Drainage System in the more congested parts of the Borough, which may be extended to embrace! othor portions as necessity arises. The Water Supply must be pushed to a successful completion, and. those streets not already reticulated must be provided for as speedily as possible. There is no doubt that our Streets and Hoads generally are in a deplorable condition. Many aro without metal at all, and in many more the metal is worn out. The whole question resolves itself into that or obtaiuing a cheaper and more regular supply of metal. I shall endeavor to develop tho sources of metal we already possess, and also to procuro additional supplies. The number of Street Lamps should bo considerably augmented. I am in favor of tho Municipal rantrol of the Gas Works, and of bringing the Eire Boards Act into operation. I. consider that tho time has arrived when Gisborne should have a continuous 1 Telephone Service, in order to bring it into lino with centres of equal importance. I am strongly of tho that provision requires to bo made for cases of Chronic Disease such as cannot be dealt with in our present Hospital, and also that the present accommodation at tho Old Men s Home should be extended sfj as to include both, sexes. ■ -• ■ - If you elect me I shall have a seat on the Harbour Board. lam in favor of the construction ot an eracient Outer Harbor, believing that better shipping facilities would materially advance the welfare of the town “and district. I endorse the action of tho Board in procuring the advice of eminent engineers, and in referring the plans to the marine superintendents of the companies trading to the port. I shall use every endeavour to have the matter placed fairly and squarely before tho ratepayers as early as possible. I am anxious that futher Reserves should bo secured for the.people, and especially desire to..obtain a Public Reserve up the Waimata River for tho use of boating parties. I heartily advocate that our Railway should be pushed on without further delay. When the forests are tapped an export timber trade will bo developed, which will result in materially reducing freights on coal and other imports, ;thus reducing the cost of living in Gisborne. I have the utmost faith in the future development of Gisborne, and should you honor mo by election 'it will bo my oonstant endeavor to promote and advance its interests by every means in my power. My watchword will ever be “Progress.” Yours faithfully, J. W. WILLIAMS.
NOTICE. TO prevent any misunderstanding with regard to tho forthcoming Borough Election, Mr. F. Harris’ Committee wishes to definitely announce his intention of coming forward to contest the vacant seat against allcomers. On behalf of Committee, W. WEBB.
