A STRANGE ACT.

A CASE OF MENTAL ABERRATION. . (Press Association.) -AUCKLAND, April 18. A sensational incident is reported as having occurred on the Queen’s AVh.arf shortly before 4 o’clock on Thursday afternoon last. An eyewitness, Air. E. J. Britain, of Bores-ford-street, states that an old man, apparently under the influence of liquor, walked to the end- of the western pier. Queen-street wharf, and after carefully folding his coat placed it with his cap on the wharf, and then calmly jumped overboard. His action was noticed by some workmen who were a little distance away, and great credit is due to one of their number, a young man named John Cassidy, who, fully dressed, jumped in after the mail and effected his rescue, with the assistance of Air. C. AlcQuillan. Air. Britain states that there -were no police about at the time to inquire into the old gentleman’s reasons for his rash act, and lie walked "off the wharf unmolested, and, it is to be presumed, a sadder and wiser man.
