CRIOKET. THE EASTER‘CARNIVAL. Owing to tho number of Thursday representatives being unable to obtain leave of absencs on Tuesday to take part in the fixture against tho visiting Eden Club, tho committee have found it necessary to make a slight alteration in the programme of matches. Instead of the East Coast meeting Eden on Saturday and Monday, play in this match will bo confined to Saturday, and the Thursday representatives match with Eden will be played on Alonday. A Poverty Bay eleven will meet the East Coast team on Monday, probably at Taruheru. The visiting Eden team arrives by the Alanuka this evening. ROWING GISBORNE CLUB. The maiden sculling competitions in connection with the above club were continued last evening, -when E. D. Chatfield and L. Gideon rowed. The -pair got well away together, and kept on level terms until the bridge was reached, when Chatfield rftlier badly fouled Gideon. The men then stopped rowing, and Gideon offered to go back to -the bridge and finish the contest. They did this, and crowed to tho winning-post, the judge’s deoision being finally given in favor of Gideon on account of the foul. The races will be continued this evening, when E. Luttrell will row either Bright or Cumming. The winner of this heat will tow Gideon to-morrow night un tho final. POVERTY BAY CLUB. The sculling races for the trophy presented by Air. H. Sand-lant were commenced last night, when R. Wilkinson (Msec) .beat D. Alurray (23sec). The races will he continued this evening. _ _ Arrangements are well an hand for the club’s social, to ho held in Whinray’s Hall on Easter Monday night, and 'at a committee meeting last night the officials were elected.
BILLIARDS. The championship games were continued last night, when J.' B. Box beat W. Valentine by 100 after a rather one-sided game, which lasted for 56 minutes. To-night '• W. Forrest and J. Nugent meet at 7.30. FOOTBALL. REFEREES’ ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Referees’ Association was held at the Royal Hotel last evening, Mr. J. Eaton in the chair. The secretary (Mr. W. Howard) presented the annual; report, which congratulated the members on the good work done last season, which had greatly improved the interpretation, of tho liner points of the game. After paying all expenses tho .association was mi credit Is, which would bo carried forward to the coming season. The first gamo of the Dominon bowlers against South Australia was played ,at Hindma.rsh. The green was heavy after a light rain. The local men led early, and at the 10th head were 13 up. Goldstone’s rink made a lino recovery, and the Dominion won aniid great excitement, on the last rin'k to finish, Waddell scoring two. Walker in the 2nd head got a seven against Hain, who never recovered,
although Thompson and las skip played nianv good shots. Spodlor led beautifully for Walker, who himseli played well. John Hill bogan quickly against- Goldstone, and on-tho loth head was 10 up. Tho Dominion captain saved magnificontly, and finishing with two twos made a tic. AUnutt always had -a load ovor Aloody, who, however, reduced it at tho finish. All niltt was several times tho saviour of his side wit'll drawing shots. Waddell and Walsh, tho local singles champion, were never far apart. In tho last bond Nonvo drew -a toucher, and Bishop got a good second, which Walsh failed to movo. Bontley was always in front of Winnall. Tho Dominion captain played an admirable game. Although tho Wellington centre of the, New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association declined to endorse tho proposal to send Alurray and Kerr to represent New Zealand at the Olympian games in London, there is reason to believo that tho scheme will succeed. Each man’s expenses are estimated roirghly at £IOO and athletic enthusiasts in Christchurch are reported to have already collected £6O. A meeting, to be presided over by Dr. Newman, lias been called for Wednesday evening, when tho proposal will again bo discussed by those who are anxious to see lverr sent-, to tho great contest.
