EMPLOYEES’ CLAIMS FUTILE. TEST CAiSE TO BE TAKEN. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April, 12. At a meeting of the executive of the Engine Drivers’ Union on Friday evening, a letter was read from the Christchurch Tramway Board, stating that it had decided not to recognise the claims of several engine drivers for back pay. In August, 1906, the .Board was convicted of a breach of award in paying less than tho minimum wages, it being a party to the award. Tho back pay, amounting to about £2OO, has never been paid, although repeated applications have been made by the men. It was decided to take legal proceedings, aoid a ballot was taken to determine which of the men should bo selected for a test case.
