ALLEGED MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE.
MASS MEETING AT AUCKLAND
DECISIVE STEPS TO BE TAKEN.
Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 2,
A largely attended public meeting was held in the Drury Hall on April Ist to express sympathy with Air. W. Dixon, who has been committed to Mount Eden gaol for two months for disobeying an order of the Magistrate's Court arising from an Arbitration Court award, and also to express indignation that a freeborn citizen of tho British Empire and of tho Dominion of New Zealand should bo hauled off to prison for such a cause. It seems that last May Mr. Dixon was cited, before the Court for employing a journeyman under wages. The man was allowed to give evidence upon oath, while Dixon (the employer), although ho requested to be sworn, Vas not allowed to givo evidence, though ho says he had a good defence. He v r as fined £5, which was paid. Tho man was fined 10s. The man then sued and got judgment for £2l back wages, which Air. Dixon refuses to pay, hence his .imprisonment. ■The meeting appointed Air. J. Flanagan to see a solicitor ;in order that some proceedings may bo taken to procure Air. Dixon’s roleaso, and, if possible, to re-open tho case. Another meeting will bo held on Saturday evening.
