A GOOD CATCH.

A ‘‘TWO-UP” SCHOOL

A NIGHT RAID BY THE POLICE

(Per Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, April 1

Yesterday evening a posse of police journeyed out to Islington with a view to raiding an. alleged “two-up” schori!, which they had reason to believe was in full swing on the side of die road there. Posting themselves behind hedges and handy cover, they suddenly' emerged out of the night upon a small group of. young men who were playing some game with coins by the aid of the light of a lantern. The’ result was that 'Matthew Walters. Andrew Miller, Chas. Wilters, Fritz Sutherland, and Edward Erskine were placed in .the dock at the Police Court .this morning, charged with playing a game of chance, to wit, “two up,”'at Islington, The charge against Erskine was withdrawn at the request of Sergeant Johnston, who asked for a refill and till Saturday. Mr. Donnelly, who appeared for the four accused, asked that bail be fixed, as it was absurd to make the young men go to gaol for three days just because they had played the atrocious game of pitch and toss after their day’s work was done. He thought they should be liberated on their own recognisances, and he protested against the’police not proceeding w-itli the case instead of remanding it. The .Bench remanded accused till Saturday', . fixing bail at £2O iii each case, aiid a surety of £2O.
