A sitting of tho Maori Lands Commission commenced, here to-day under tho presidency of Sir Robert Stout. Two chiefs welcomed Sir Robert Stout in the customary florid style of rhetoric. In reply. Sir Robert Stout stated the Maoris recklessly dissipated their lands, and wasted their time and means. The race had dwindled to half its former’numbers, indulgence in liquor being accountable for most of the deaths. The salvation of the Maoris rested in tho reservation of land for their occupation and working.
