THE AMERICAN FLEET.
AUCKLANDERS WILL GIVE HEARTY WELCOME.
PROPOSED PARLIAMENTARY VOTE FOR RECEPTION.
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 31
A good deal of interest is being taken locally in the projected visit of tho American licet to Auckland. From enquiries made by a representative of the “Herald,” it is quite apparent that a. hearty reception awaits the fleet should the United States authorities decide upon it calling hero en route to Australia. Tho Mayor (Mr. A. M. Myers) is prepared to call a meeting or citizens directly ho receives intimation that the visit is to be made. Members of Parliament, interviewed, expressed the opinion that the Government would .assist in making the reception and entertainment of the visitors worthy of tho occasion, and that a reasonable grant for tho purpose woidd lie supported by both sides of tho House. According'to the harbormaster * (Captain Duder), there is ample accommodation in the harbor for the American fleet if it visited this port. He said that the harbor could accommodate a much _ larger fleet without interfering with the local shipping, as between North Head and Birkenhead there wore four nautical miles of space available, with a varying width of from one-third and onehalf a nautical mile.
