CUSTOMS REVENUE.

A I/AK&E MCHEASE. Nothing is so indicative of the progress of a community as the amount spent in purchases, and the Customs duties paid can always be taken as an index of .the money in circulation. The- duties paid at the Customs House, Gisborne, for the past three months shows a large increase over any previous quarter, amounting to £11,683 17s 3d, as against £9431 Is sil for the same period last yt.ar. Tho total amount collected during the mouth of Alarch was £5067 4s lid, against £4047 15s 2d .for the corresponding month in 1907, and when itis remembered that neither sugar nor cotton piece goods now pay duty, tho receipts can bo looked upon as most satisfactory, .as they show a substantial, decrease oil all .commodities'taxed. Duties on the various items for the month were: —Spirits £1412 17s ■ld, cigars £289 5s Oil, tobacco and cigarettes £566 16s (id, wine £l6l 7s Dil, beer £52, goods taxed by weight. £74 8s Bil, ad valorem £lß7l 6*s lOd, other duties £27 18s (id, other receipts £596 14s 2d. For the quarter ending March 31 the amounts collected were: Spirits £4355 13s, cigars and cigirettos £965 12s 2d, tobacco £1656 7s Gil, wine £402 lbs lid, beer £246, cocoa £6 ss, goods by weight £392 16. s 7d, goods ad valorem £3550 12s 6il, other duties £IOB 0s Oil; total. £11,683 17s 3d. Excise duty, £289 15s.
