TE ARAI CATTLE AT MATAAVITERO. Yesterday, at the Matawhero saleyards, the New Zealand: Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., in conjunction with .Messrs. Williams and Kettle, Ltd., under instructions from Mr. John Clark, of Te Arai, offered a large yarding of Shorthorn cows, picked herd of heifers, stud cows, two-year-old steers, and, -Shorthorn bulls. There was a fair crowd of buyers present, but bidding was slow. The pure-bred Shorthorn bull Tip-top was knocked down at 20 guineas, -and the other bulls were reserved for -private sale. Sixty-six 2i-year-old steers, being a mixed pen of Shorthorns and Polled Angus' in prime condition, brought. £4 2s Gd, and 221 young steers, Shorthorns and Polled Angus, went for £2 18s; 245 well-grown Angus and Shorthorncross heifers were knocked down to Mr. Barker at £1 17s Gd, and wero considered a bargain. Tho stud cows did not cause much competition, a number, of pens being passed in. Two pens, in all 23 stud iSliortliorns, with calves at foot, failed to elicit a bid. Five stud Shorthorns brought £lO 10s, and eight handsome cows, three of which -were prizetakers, only realised £9. Thirteen picked inire-bred stud Shorthorns, with calves at -foot and to ealve, touched £l2, after good competition. The dairy cows were iiot wanted, and a herd of 33 was held over-for private sale.
The- sale will be continued at the Te Arai homestead to-morrow, when 11,120 sheep,- 42 horses, including the Clydesdale stallion: Canpngate, and the thoroughbred stallion' Sabretache, will be offered. The ploughs, reapers and binders, harrows, carts, drays, waggons, and other farming requisites -will also be sold.
THE LONDON MARKETS
(Per Press Association.) AVELLINGTON, -.March 30. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received ihe following cable, dated London, 28th March: Tho -mutton market is firm. The stock of Now Zealand mutton on hand is light, and small shipments are expected. 'Canterbury mutton, is at for light- weights, pud; 3|d for heavy -weights; other than Canterbury* is at 4Jd for light .weights arid 3|d for heavy weights. There iis -a good demand for all lamb. Supplies are increasing. Canterbury brands are quoted at s:]d, other than Canterbury 51d. The beef market is quiet, but firm. There is an increasing demand for better grades; hindquarters 3|d, forequarters 2J. The butter market is quiet, but steady. Buyers' -are holding back, expecting prices to go lower. There is good local, but no speculative demand. The choicest New Zealand butter is at Ills, Danish 113 s, Australian 108 s, and Argentine 108 s per cwt. The cheese market is steady. There is a bettor demand for white makes at GGs and .for colored at G2s per .cwt. Tho hemp market is quiet, and’ rather steadier. Heavy shipments are expected from 'Manila. The -following are current, quotations: , Good fair grades, on spot, £24 -JOs. April to Juno shipments are quoted as follows: Good fair grade £23 10s, .fair grade £2l 10s, fair current Manila £23 10s per ton. The cocksfoot market is firm, owing to a speculative demand, and 1 it is reported that the, cocksfoot seed harvest sin New Zealand this season is light. There is no change in prices to rexiort in wool. The market, is rather duller. < .
