The usual weekly parade of the Gisborne Rifles was hold in the Drill Shed last night, under tho command of Captain Beere, when- there was a strong muster of the corps.
It has been decided by tho St. Patrick’s Snorts Committee to cancel their sports for this year. .Competitors may get their entry monies refunded on application to the -secretary, Mr. |E. Williams.
The usual monthly meeting of the Gisborne Women’s Guild was held in Towniey’s Hall yesterday afternoon, Mrs. Towiiley presiding.. The members reported on t-ho work done during tho month, and subscriptions amounting to a very satisfactory sum were handed in.
A meeting of the Holy Trinity Ladies’ Guild was held yesterday afternoon in tlio schoolroom. About 12 I a dies were-present, and -much useful work was done. The ladies are working with the object of holding a bazaar next spring, the proceeds of which will bo devoted to mission work and to tho Holy Trinity Church building fund.
The New Alpine Cold Mine has now started crushing. One shift only is working at present, as the present -plant does not give sufficient power to work the lower levels and drive battery at the same time. No. 12 level is opening up well. It is proposed to take -about- 400 to GOO tons from the middle winze as a trial crushing, and this will take until the end of April. After a trial crushing from the middle winze, working will be proceeded with on the ißig South Block, where about four years’ stone is already opened up. Thero wero some amusing scones ill connection with tho Te Ami ballot, When, tho applicants were being examined on Thursday, ono raised a laugh by tho earnestness with which ho presented the 'evidences of his bona tides. Filially, as it still -appeared to him that the members of t-ho Board were not sufficiently impressed, and to make matters doubly sure he loaned forward, and, showing a hank note crumbled up in his outstretched hand, hoarsely whispered, “Perhaps this will help it through.” It only remains to ho recorded that tho offer of the bribe caused some mirth, -and brought the applicant wo luck, for none of tho black marbles fell to his -share of the. drawing.
There was a moderato attendance at His Majesty’s Theatre last evening on the occasion of the second performance of the Cook County Curious Coons. As on the previous evening, the items rendered by Messrs.. H. J. Grieve and It. Wilkinson were the most anpreciated 'by the audience, with the*exception of the comic songs by Master Leonard Skeet, who was undoubtedly..t-lie .star artist of the evening. The second part of the 'programme consisted purely of a vocal entertainment, 'in which several visitors to the town took part. Mr. Lewis. with Ids whistling solo, was cordially received, and had to respond to no less than four occasions. The accompaniments were tastefully played by Miss McElhone, and special mention must bo given to tho orchestra, whoso efforts met with -the hearty appreciation of the audience.
Special services are advertised to be held in Holy Trinity Churcly tomorrow. There will bo colouration of the Holy Communion at 8 a.m. At 11 u.m. there wil be a special service in connection'W-it-h the institution of Mr W H. Powell as 'assistant to the Vicar of Holy Trinity. Mr. Powell has come from the diocese of Jselson. and is preparing -for ordination. A special service has been drawn up bj the llishan, and is of a very solemn nature. In -the absence of the Bishop and the Archdeacon, the Key. L. \V Cliatterton lias been deputed to officiate, and will also occupy the pulpit In the evening the Vicar will occupy the pulpit, and will continue the course of Lenten addresses on “The Lord's Prayer: Its Message for our Time.” The Vicar is inviting questions on any .point raised in the addresses, and several questions will be answered from the pulpit to-mor-row evening. Parishioners and Jail residents in the town' and distric- are cordially invited to ‘.attend the services, especially the Institution service at- 11 a.m. There will be the usual evening services at 7 o clock in the Mangapapa and Karti district schools.
The offering of so useful and popular an article as a fire shovel at such a low price last Saturday was an opportunity not to be missed, judging by the number of people taking advantage of the day at Parnell’s ironmongery. This week it is mouse-traps.
