TE ORANGA SCANDAL.
ENQUIRY STILL PROCEEDING. THE MATRON’S EVIDENCE. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March 20. The Te Oranga Home inquiry was continued to-day, when Mrs. Branting gave evidence, refuting the charges. She stated tin reference to the girl in the Samaritan Home that she wanted the girl back because the situation she proposed to take was not suitable, as she would be too much on her own responsibility, and without supervision. She had her hair cut off as an absconder, but- only after permission had been granted by the Department:. She (the witness) had ordered the girl to scrub floors in her bare feet, so that her boots, stockings, and clothing would be dry when siie had finished. With regard to the gratuity to tho postman charged oil the vouchers as fruit for dinners, she admitted doing it, butnot with the object of deceiving the Department. The strap was only used as a last resource after persuasion had failed. She would like to see the classification system adopted, as it would do away with a- large amount of corporal punishment.
