The games have been marked by some splendid play throughout, and the performance of the St. Johns in winning all their games is an excellent one.

ROWING.

Last night the local rowers to represent the town at the championship regatta, commencing next Monti ay, left for Napier. The Gisborne Club’s crew consisted of B. Bright, G. Butler. M. Doyle, ami H. Bennett, and H. Clhrisp (cox), and the crew will compete in the ten-stone, maiden, and open maiden fours. The Poverty Bay crew is as follows: —M. McLeod, J." Nicolas, C. Winter, J. Stewart, and J. Lang (cox.). They will compete in the maiden and junior fours. Mr. D. E. ’Dustin accompanied’ the teams, and twill compete in tile maiden and junior sculls.

CRICKET.

Tlie following eleven will represent the United C(uh_ in tlie match against Te Rau at Victoria Domain on Saturday afternoon next: —Burke, Bowman, L. Coop, Gibson (2), Gorman, Hallamore, Reynolds, F. Sharp, Whyte, and Yeats. Emergencies: Jeffreys and McLeod. The match is expected to provide an exciting contest, as both teams are running level in the lead for the championship.

BILLIARDS.

The Victoria Billiard Saloon was taxed to its utmost capacity last night to accommodate tho largo crowd which assembled to witness the contest between B. Lucas and C. Weston in tho championship competition. Weston was tho first to get going, and quickly established a lead. Lucas, however, with a nicely-compiled break of 34, overhauled his opponent, and from this point onwards kept in the lead, ,eventually', reaching 250 when Weston was 217. Tlie game was not a very fast one, and took two minutes over tlie hour to complete. Mr. Segedin, tho proprietor of the saloon, was very attentive to tho wants of his patrons, and despite the largo crowd, seating accommodation was found for ail.

N.Z. PROFESSIONALS. NORTHERN UNION MATCH. United Press Association —Copyright (Received March 18, 9.37 p.m.) SYDNEY, March IS. From a spectacular point of view the Northern match against the Now Zealanders Ut Stamford Bridge was a great success. About 12,000 were present, and tho Englishmen were completely outplayed. In the first half Smith scored for the Now Zealanders, after a brilliant run, .Messenger converting. Only tine tackling by Taylor saved the English lino from being crossed on several occasions, Wrigley being particularly noticeable for fine work. After a good bout of passing the Northerners scored, but failed to convert. The second half saw fine passing by Wynyard and Messenger, from which Johnson scored. but Messenger failed to add the .points. Soon after Todd crossed the tine again, and Messenger this time succeeded with the kick, and followed it up by kicking a goal off another try secured by Johnson. In the last five minutes the Englishmen got going, and Eccles, who was injured early in the game, crossed the line, but the place kick failed, the visitors winning by 18 points to 6.

THE TURF.

WAIPIRO RACES. (From Our Correspondent.) The .annual race meeting was held at IVaipiro yesterday. Tlie weather was gloriously fine, but tho attendance was not as large as on previous occasions. The racing, as usual, took place on (the beach, ’and was fairly good, there being one or two very close and exciting finishes. Appended are the details :

Maiden -Plate. —Awanui 1, Ilby 2. Five horses started, and Awanui led all the way, and won easily. Flying Handicap.—Lady Crispin 1, Cheddito 2. Five starters. An excellent race. Lady Crispin just got home .by u narrow margin. District Race. —Awanui i, Mot-uke-liu 2, Toronto 3. These were the only starters, and Awanui won easily. Tawhit-i Gup.—Hinetitama 1, Princo Hassail 2. Che-dilito canio first- past the winning post, hut her rider failed to draw the weight by 21b, and was disqualified. Hack Race. —Lady Crispin 1, Earmark 2. Five starters. An excellent race and splendid finish, tho race just being won on the .post-. Farewell Handicap.—Banker 1, Rea.v 2. Four horses started, but Banker had matters all his own way, and won very easily.

THE NAPIER MEETING. SECOND DAY. Press Association. NAPIER, March 18. The Napier Park Racing Club’s carnival meeting was concluded today, when there was again a very large attendance. The racing was good, and the sum of £8995 was invested on the totalisator,' making -a total of £16,621 for the meeting, an increase of £2345 over last year’s total.
