SALVAGE CORPS.

Ail adjourned meeting of tlio Salvage Corps was held in the Masonic Hotel last night. Mr C. F. Lewis was in the chair.

The ' Chairman presented a report from himself and Messrs Hull and Sawyer as to donations. The committee recommended that a circular asking for donations should be sent out to the largo linns.

Mr Hull said that the hat was taken round so much in the town that-they would probably ho rebuffed if they endeavored to collect money personally. Jfo thought more money would bo collected by circular than by personal interview. Many townspeople who had seen the damage at the late lirei expressed thoir willingness to him (the speaker) to contribute. It was decided to adopt the com-/ mittoo’s recomendation. '

Mr Miller proposed Mr Geo. Wildish as captain ol the corps. Mr Wildish, ho said, was espccialy suited to the position because of his long service in the fire brigade. Under the new Fire Brigades Act firemen became purely fire-lighters, and salvage corps would have to do life-saving, police duty, and look after the saving of property. The Act also laid it down that the controller of everything at a fire was the superintendent of the fire brigade, who had power to order tlio police and salvage corps. Mr Lewis was also*'nominated for the position. The opinion was expressed that it was hardly right to take a good member from the lire brigade. Mr Lewis was finally elected by 6 votes to 3. In returning thanks Mr Lewis said the chairman of tlio Underwriters’ Association bad promised to help, the corps in every possible manner.

Mr Scott was elected first lieutenant, and Mr Leslie treasurer. It was decided to adjourn for a week. An effort would bo made to get a full meeting of members, and two lieutenants and a committee would be elected. The Chairman said an endeavour would be made to lravo the circular regarding donations circulated and returned before next meeting.
