FILTHY SURROUNDINGS AND IMPROPER FEEDING. Press Association. DUNEDIN, Alarch 17. An inquest on the body of AA'illiam Vivian Garrick, aged 4£ months, who died in Karitane Home on Saturday, was held to-day. The evidence disclosed a deplorable state of affairs, showing that nine people were living in a three-roomed tenement, which was described by a medical witness as being in ail indescribably filthy condition.

The child afterwards was taken to Its mother’s home, where the humanised milk treatment was continued, and subsequently cow’s milk mixed with water, also Ncave’s food. The reason alleged for the change was that the child did not- thrive on humanised milk. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that death was duo to acute indigestion, produced by improper feeding, the opinion also being expressed that the insanitary surroundings had contributed to some extent to the child’s death.
