“TIIE MORALS OF MARCUS.”
The Herbert Flemming Comedy Company open red at His Majesty's Theatre on Saturday evening in tlie charming four-act play, “The Morals of Marcus.” There was again a crowded house, and the audience was absorbed in the Interest of the story from the rise of the curtain to the fall. Mr. A. S. Homewood played Sir Marcus Ordeyne and gave a masterly rendering of the retired scholar, who becomes embarrassed by the presence in his house of a, homeless waif from Syria. Miss Beatrice Hay appeared to advantage as Judith Mainwaring, who is in love with Marcus, but whose love is only reciprocated as a platonic friendship. Miss Guildford Quin was the waif Carlotta, and her acting showed great power and dramatic resource. Mr. W. J. Montgomery was equally successful as the scheming Frenchman Pasquali. So successful has this play proved in New Zealand, that Mr. Flemming has decided to use it as tho opening piece for his Sydney season, which commences at tho conclusion of his present tour of the Dominion. • The company left by the Monowai for Napier last evening.
