Keen interest was taken in tho athletic meeting at the University Oval, as the outcome of the challenge of the New Zealand team which recently visited Hobart to" the University Athletic Club. The weather was lino and tho attendance large. Owing to the short notice the students wore hardly in ns fit condition as they might have boon, hut were not placed at a great disadvantage. as since leaving llobart the New Zealanders have spent tho time holiday-making. Much disappointment was felt at Trembath not starting in the halfmile race, as the meeting between him and Barker over this distance, after Barker’s defeat had been keenly nntieipated. Barker was in great form. Mis time for the 300yds was an Australasian, and prolfhbly a world’s, record. Trembath made a runaway mitoh in the mile, winning easily; and Orbell won the high jump, clearing sft Tin. Subsequently lie tried to clear sft- ll jin, with a view to beating the Australasian record, hut after three attempts he failed. A feature of tlie meeting was Maekay's exhibition of nolorvaultiug. He cleared ICft, and on the bar being raised to lift, in attempting to jump his pole broke, and lie came a nasty cropper, but escaped without injury. Following are the results:— _ lOOvds Challenge.—Nigel Barker 1. Henderson 2, Waddell 3. Won from start to finish -by 3yds. Time, 10 2-3 sec. Fisher (New Zealand) started, but was left on the mark. 100yds Handicap.—Mackay 1, Stew-' art 2, Henderson 3. From the lOyijs mark Mackay easily accounted for his heat and the final. Time, 10 3-osec. 300vds Challenge.—Barker 1. Trembath 2, Roe 3. Other New Zealand starters were: —Murray, Fisher, and Henderson. Barker shot off the mark full of vim, going in front, and lengthened the margin every step, and won easily by a dozen yards. Time, 31sec, which is an Australasian record. High Jlimning Challenge. —Orbell, oft Tin, 1; Welsh, sft Gin, 2; Buddy, sft oin, 3. 120vds Hurdles Challenge.—Stewart l‘ Murray 2, Orbell 3. Won by (syds. Time, IGsee. which is a New South Wales record. Broad Jump.—Stewart, 21ft, 1 ; Barker, 20ft Gin, 2; Mackay, 19it llin, 3. „ , Half-mile Challenge.—Barker 1, Murray 2, Fitzhardinge 3. Barker hung behind until about 50 yards from home, and then making a strong sprint beat Murray by syds. I rembatli and Fisher did not start. Milo Race Challenge. —3rembath 1, Wadd” 2. The New Zealander kept itl a good position behind until the last quarter, when lie gradually moved to the front. He did a splendid sprint- over the last 250yds, n inning easily by lovds. Time, Imin oosec. Mile Walk. —Iverr 1, Stubberiiekl 2. Two Sydney men started, but gave up at the -half-mile. Kerr was m splendid form, and won easily by 60yds. Time, Tmin 14 l-ssec.
