PALMERSTON COUNCIL

DEADLOCK STILL CONTINUES. Press Association. PALMERSTON, March. 9. Tho Palmerston Borough Council again met last evening to discuss the matter of Curator Smith’s resignation as curator of reserves, when Cr. Nash once more put his amendment to refer tho matter to the Reserves Committee, and the Mayor again declined to take either the amendment or the original resolution, and refused to accept his resignation. A tong and heated discussion ensued, during jvhich Cr. Nash stated his intention of informing the curator that his resignation was not accepted, and that he was to continue to hold the position, A letter published by Mr. Smith in tiie “Manawatu Times” was read by the Mayor, who denied all tho statements therein, and said that he would like to know whether Mr. Smith was an employee or the. Governor of the Council, and that it seemed strange to him that so much fuss should be made over a common cabbage gardener. Councillors objected to the Mayor thus referring to a responsible borough employee, and he withdrew his rem a rk, Tho meeting closed with neither tiie resolution nor the amendment being put, and it is tacitly understood that Cr. Nash will act in accordance with his words, and instruct the curator to occupv his position until the Council either .accepts or declines his resignation.
