WOMEN AND LIQUOR.

DRINKING IN HOTELS. (Special to Times.) AVELLINGTON, Alarch 5. AA’dlJington does not appear to be as bad as Auckland in the- matter ol drinking in hotels by women, though a number of women -here as elsewhere, do patronise the hotel bars. An authority of the police, when approached on the subject by the “Post” was not at -all concerned to hear that there was drinking among women at Auckland, or anywhere else. For tho past thirty or forty years he had been fully akyaro that a certain section of respectable women visited hotels occasionally, for tho purpose of getting a drink, and ho seemed to imply that the records of the police court were not- materially affected thereby. Everyone of course 'knows that at Home, women drink more openly in hotels than in New Zealand, but he did not at all consider that women- are contracting the drinking habit unduly in the Dominion . Another experienced police officer had much the same story to tell. According to him the women of AA'el-lingt-on do not go to hotels, hut only the class of women whose visit to a hotel is merely the inevitable prelude to ail appearance before the court. There may, he admitted, be a few who drop into -a quiet private room at an out of the way hotel occasionally for a quiet moment and a drink, but their number is small. Generally speaking, the women of AA’ellington, in his experience, do not drink in hotels.
