WELLINGTON.
(Special to Times.) AVELLINGTON, Alarcli 4. The selling price of Wailii -shares on the stock exchange to-day was £9 Is and Talisman shareholders want £2 14s. Holders of -Atanawatu Rails will not soli at- £2 4s 9, and there is little business doing. The estate of the Rev. Archdeacon S. Williams of Hawke’s Bay has been proved for stamp duty at £429,566. Important Cabinet meetings to be held shortly will cause Mr AlcNab to defer his visit to Christchurch for the present. Mr. H. G. Price, lands transfer draughtsman in Wellington, who has been promoted to the position of Chief Draughtsman of the Lands and Survey Department, Napier, is one of the senior officers of the Lands and Survey Department. Referring to Sir Joseph AA r a-rd’s optimism regarding the revenue the “Post” says: “Of course the country is prosperous. It would he a queer land and a queer people who could not show something for a -dozen fairly good seasons. Naturally the revenue is not sparse, and it is good enough t-o be an excuse for moderate satisfaction, but fijit- for jublitation. There is a debit as well as a credit side, and there’ is 'a magnificent race- between the national debt and t-lio surplus, and the debt is winning all the time. It is pleasing to find the treasurer in such buoyant spirits about the outlook, hut there is danger iil 'h'is exuberance. The level-headed can make the proper discount, but tens of thousands are liable to be misled, and to forget that they arc partly living on mortgage.”
