IXVEItCAR G ILL REGATTA. Press Association. IN VERCARGILL, March 4. The principal item of interest in the local regatta to-dav was the interprovincial fours for the Edwards Challenge Shield, which has been held by Southland for about five years. The Otago crew, Sanders, Hutchison, Patton, and Whitaker (str) was considered likely to win, but had no chance with Campbell, Johnston, Brown, and Bastion, the last three of whom have been in the:wiuuing crew
for some years. The Southland men, rowing well within themselves, took a. gradual lead, and held it, winning comfortably by - aboifb a? length and a half. • • The Junior Foursjfas” iv?H by Invercargill Rowing,’M/iub, Foil Chalmers second, and North End (Dunedin) third. Port Chalmers won the Youths’ Fours, Railway second, Invercargill third. Tlie Maiden Pairs went D the Otago Rowing Club, Invercargill second, and Port Chalmers third. Invercargill won the Junior Pairs. Senior Fours: Port Chalmers I,’Tnvereargill 2, Otago Rowing Club 3. In this race Invercargill (the same crow that won the intcrprovincial race), when a mile from home touched a shoal under the water, and Johnston’s oar was broken by striking a bank. They had then about three lengths lead, but of course had no further chance, and the Port gradually crept uji, and won by about, five lengths. Maiden Fours: Port Chalmers 1, Railway 2 and 3. Senior Doubles: Invercargill 1, Port Chalmers 2. Maiden Doubles: Port Chalmers 1, Invercargill 2. Senior Pairs: Invercargill 1, Port Clialjners 2. *
