At the ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Fire Brigade, which was held last evening, the secretary read a letter from Air. J. Townley, thanking the members of the brigade for their splendid efforts at the late fire, and also included a cheque for ten guineas towards the funds of the brigade. Notice of motion was proposed by Fireman A. Thomson that the rules of the brigade be revised, and a committee be formed to go into the necessary revision. It was also considered that it was time some alterations were made at the meeting-room, which was rather small and inconvenient for the purpose, especially when the additions to the brigade are completed. The secretary was also instructed to write thanking Air. D. Dustin for the kind ‘hospitality to the members of the brigade to- providing hot coffee and solid refreshments when they were working at tile recent big fire.

A fairly well-attended meeting was held at the Alusonic Hotel last evening in connection with the formation of a fire salvage corps for Gisborne. Air. C. F. Lewis was elected to the chair. The chairman spoke as to tlio necessity of the proposal, especially in- view of the fire on Wednesday week. In the old corps they had 17 men, with a limit of 20. Mr. Miller proposed that the present corps be organised and be placed on a sound* footing. The duty of tlio fire police' was to assist the brigade and rope off tlio ground to keep the crowd away from a building if necessary. Instead of removing goods they could be covered when the roof caught fire, but properly trained men and officers were needed, and this was absolutely essential. At the recent fire people were inside the burning buildings, and the firemen could not see where their liases came from. They would get any number of good men to do the work, and no expensive uniform would be required. Air. J. K. Scott said that a uniform was needed for recognition, as well us keeping their clothes clean. AVliat the corps wanted was assistance from the business men. It was decided to rooi - - ganise the corps. The chairman stated, in reply to a question, that the special constables who were sworn in would still remain in office. The chairman remarked that some seemed to have come to cause trouble. The following names were handed in:—Messrs. G. Wildish, C. Somerville, P. AlcPherson, J. K. Scott, C. F. Lewis, Lang, S. Parson;, A. iSawycr, R. Miller, T. Leslie, G. Bull, H. Breingan. F. Jeune, G. Williams. S.- Eusor, J. Nisbett, E. Somerville. Eleven of these were present in tile room. Air. F. 11. Lawton expressed surprise that the big firms were not represented. Air. Aliller said he was satisfied that there would be no lack of funds. The big firms did not consider it their place to come forward. -The members of the corps wore limited to 25. On the motion of Air. J. Nisbett, seconded by Air. E. Feu ton. "i committee, consisting of Messrs Bull, Sawyer, and tlio chairman, was set up to wait on business men for subscriptions.
