HOTEL LICENSES.

- ’ ILLEGAL 'TRANSFERS. At a meeting of the Waiapu Licensing Committee held on Saturday, there were "present Messrs. AY. A. Barton, S.M. (chairman), D. Hepburn, and G. E. Darton. Mr. F. W. Nolan applied for a transfer of the license of the Waereng.i-a-hika Hotel from George P. Priestley tc Albert Pritchard. Mr. Darton said that a custom* had grown up ill the district of placing new licensees in charge of hotels which liad changed hands before an application for a temporary license had coino before the Licensing Committee.

Mr. ‘Barton said such action was entirely contrary to tho law. In such cases the licensee was liable to bo proceeded against. Mr. Nolan said Mr. Pritchard had been in charge for only a few days. Mr. Barton said the principle was very bad. Mr. Darton said ho thought the new licensees should get a sort of provisional ’approval from the chairman. Mr. Barton said nothing of the kind had been done ill this case. It would be a wrong procedure. He would ask the police to keep au eye on the matter. He would not take the responsibility of approving such applications—they should he dealt with by the committee. ■
