ROWING.
The new boats for the Gisborne Club are expected to arrive daily. It has now been definitely decided not to send a junior crew to Napier to represent the Gisborne Club, iiic club will be represen.cd only bv the ten-stone crew, which is putting in a lot of useful practice. There was a good muster at the ordinary meeting oi the committee of the Poverty Bay Rowing Club on Monday evening, and ordinary routine business was conducted, the principal item being preliminary work in connection with the Easter social. Entries are now being taken for the names of all those willing to represent the Poverty Bay Club against the Gisborne Club for the Challenge shield given by the licensed victuallers for annual competition by senior, junior and ten-stone crews. From the names already sent in three very good crews should be selected, although the Napier crews will cause a little inconvenience to the selectors. The crews for the President’s trophies were putting in come good colid work last' week, or to lie precise, some of them. Stewart’s crew, which requires some very solid work, were idle two or three nights owing to the indisposition of one of the crew. Seymour’s crew has been idle most of the week when fast work is necessary if they hope to succeed against some of the crews they have to meet. The favorites, McLeod’s crew, have put in some fast sculling this week and are going very well indeed. Jone’s crew also have put in some good work and are an improving combination. Nicholas has put in failwork, and although this crew is not rowing strictly in the orthodox style the men are getting a fair amount ol pace out of their boat, and I expect them to reach tlie final event, with Stewart’s crew close up to the winners. It is expected to start,.,Alio.first heat on Monday night, and'some very good racing should be witnessed.' Matters have been quiet in the Gisborne shed during the week, except for hard training on the part of the crews for the Schumacher Fours. The Gisborne Club at an earH date will pick the crews to row for the Licensed Victuallers’ Shield.
