THE SEDDON MONUMENT. Press Association. WELLINGTON, Eeb. 3. Tho Government intends calling for tenders immediately for tho monument to be erected over the grave of the late Air. Seddon on the Observatory Hill overlooking Bolton Street cemetery, according to tho design prepared by Mr. Campbell, tho On vernment architect. Tho monument is to consist of a column and pedestal standing on a base of three steps, tho bottom step being 23ft square and the top one lilt square. The pedestal is to have a height of lCft from the ground, square, and measures 41t Gin on each side, tapping to 3ft lOiu at the necking. It has a moulded and foliated capital, and is sunnouutcd by a symbolical statue 101'fc in height. The total height of the monument will be 59ft from the ground. Tho pedestal lias four square buttresses on the angles, with carved trusses on tho top, each surmounted by a lion recumbent. The monument will be constructed with a core of ferro-eon-cretn, and faced with New Zealand marble or granite. ’Hie pedestal has panels, which will admit of suitable inscription, and over which there are carved festoons, one having in plain letters the word “Seddon.” Tenders are returnable within a couple of weeks, and it is expected that the work will be completed within four months. Owing to its large size and its prominent position, the monument wil be discernible from the whole of the harbor aud many parts of the city. It- will bo massive and well proportioned, though without elaborate detail.
