SUBMARINE CABLES.
A NEW ONE ORDERED
Press Association
"WELLINGTON, Jan. 29
The Government has sent to England for a new submarine cable, which will be kept in stock, to ' be ready for laying if necessity suddenly arises. The cost of the cable is about £BOOO, and its purchase is necessary, because the existing stock is required for the proposed cables between Elinsllies Bay and Durville Island, thence to Stephen Island, and another connecting'the Central Island with the mainland, near Riverton. The Premier attaches great importance to the laying of these short and comparatively inexpensive cables, as they will enable passing shipping to keep in touch with the mainland, movements being reported and masters informed of weather conditions to be expected.
