BUSH FIRES.

SAWMILL AND TRAMWAY DESTROYED. Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Jan. 29. Rush fires raged fiercely round Otnutau township yesterday. .Messrs Harrington Bros.’a sawmill and a long stretch of tramway and a considerable area of virgin bush was destroyed. A change of wind saved tho Southland Timber Company’s mill. WHOLES ALE DESTRUCTION. Press Association. DUNEDIN, Jan. 29.

Advice reached Dunedin to-night that he fires raging in the Waipori district have destroyed several square miles of lmsli. The fire apparently started on Messrs Witchers Bros.’ run on the opposite side of the river to the Waipori electrical power works, but the sparks were carried across tho water and the lire is now burning on both sides of the river. Ail outbreak started this afternoon, and had not been suppressed when the latest advice was received. The corporation barracks were practically destroyed, also a cottage and stables, almost everything contained therein being lost. The barracks were insured for £7OO. The power station is said to he well removed from the danger zone, hut men are being kept on watch all night.
