On Saturday tho wharf presented a busy appearance. Tho wliolo of tho berthing accommodation was taken up by four sailing vesso’s and tlireo steamers.
The lads from this district who have joined tho Ainokuru, who hud recently been spending furlough at their homes, loft by tho Taluuo last night for Wellington.
The British Biograpli Company appear at His Majesty’s Theatre tonight with now films and illustrated songs. The company is said to givo a first-class entertainment.
The now Motn telephone lias been erected to a short distance beyond tho Willows Crossing. Delivery of material along tho routo is expected to bo completed within a fortnight. There has been a very great demand for drovers, as very large numbers of sheep are being drafted to the Waikato and also to other parts of the Poverty Bay district. On Saturday no less than seven drovers wero required. A Kaiti resident informs us of a quick method of growing maize. Ho soaked it. in water, and dug trenches which wero also liberally watered. Ho then put tho maize in the trenchos, and in five days it was out of the ground and within eight days it boro two ears.
Mr. Edgar, representing Messrs J. B. Mac Ewan and Co., has recently been inspecting tho L.Iv.G. milking machine■> crectod in this district at tho farms of Messrs Picken, Von Poin, Lung, Bell, Knight, and Judd. All expressed satisfaction witli tho machines. Mr. Edgar says that this season over 700 machines have been sold. He is now hooking forward orders so that, machines to be installed next season can bo dolivored punctually.
A party of about twenty gentlemen had a somewhat unpleasant experience yesterday afternoon in a woll-'kuown oil launch. They bad a cruise in the bay, which was very clioppy, and proceeded as far as the Talune, lying at anchor. They had just turned and bad only gone about a hundred yards on tho return journey when tho salt spray entering the batteries prevented the working or tho machinery. Tho rollling was a trifle uncomfortable, and then tlio swoops wero got out, and with, tho swell and tho wind tlio launch managed to get inside the river, and then with tho turn of the tide good progress was made. When near the wharf, which was lined with the usual Sunday’s crowd, the engines came right, and in duo course tlio anchorage was safely reached.
