EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. PATIENTS SAFELY REMOVED. PreßS Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 22. The Christchurch Hospital is on fire. Tho ward known as Hyman Mark’s brick building is burning. Tho roof has fallen in. Tlio patients are all out. FURTHER. DETAILS. A fire occurred in the Christchurch hospital' this forenoon, and extensively damaged the newer portions of the buildings. Tho patients in the wards- affected! were all removed without difficulty, and it is not anticipated that the results to them will be serious. In any ease, the inconvenience in an already over-crowd-ed hospital, will be very great, Tlio fire started, in tU;> roof of Hyman Mark’s . building, a two-storv erection in brick, at tlio west end of the hospital, containing the men’s accident .and women’s and children « wards. It was discovered at about 10 o’clock, and spread along under the roof with great rapidity. Jinny helpers were soon at work moving paUeiils to the corridors and other winds, and the fire brigade undertook the quelling of the outbreak, hut (his was not accomplished until the building bad been gutted, exrepi in a portion of the lower story. The wooden portion of the hospital was not damaged. Hyman Mark’s wards cost £IO.OOO to erect, and are insured in tho Government office for £SOOO. The brick walls are intact, and probably restoration will cost about £3OOO.
