Fielder and Barnes began the English attack against- Noble and Trumper. A half-hours play produced 27. and at 35 Barnes beat Macartney with a break-back. Macartney was in for 33 minutes. Barnes had bowled seven overs for 10 runs for 2 wickets. At 45 Crawford replaced Fielder. Fifty went up for 66 minutes’ play, and at 52 Barnes, who had bowled 10 overs, including live maidens, for 13 runs and 2 wickets, was given a spell, Braund taking his cud, Macalister took 35 minutes getting into double figures. "When he had crept to 17 in 4S minutes Crawford got him leg before. 3 for 71. Armstrong opening vigorously and the deficit was wiped of after 105 minutes’ play. At SO -a- double change change t-o Hutchings and Rhodes was resorted to. Armstrong’s double figures took 12 minutes. Two fourc-rs by Armstrong completed the hundred in 2 hours. Barnes then relieved Hutchings, and Noble reached 'his 50 aftei> he had been batting for 130 minutes. Fielder then took tho ball from Rhodes, and Noble -when at 54 put up a ball to cover which Rhodes scarcely reached.' Each batsman scored 3 in the next over. Fielder had only one over, as he had to retire indisposed. Braund took his place. Barnes’ next over yielded 9 runs, each batsman hitting a fourer. Armstrong then made a mighty hit straight over Braund’s head, ,and Hutchings on" .boundary judged it nicely. Armstrong had batted well for 55 minutes, but threw away his wicket. 4 for 127. O’Connor helped Noble to play out time. Noble’s defence was masterly for 2 hours 40 minutes. The Englishmen’s fielding was perfect. Tho following are the scores;—

CRICKET ASSOCIATION
The usual weekly meeting of the management committee was held last evening at the British Empire Hotel. Present: Messrs. Hallamore (chairman), J. Lang, McColl, Emanuel, Cary, H. E. MaucTe, Thelwall, W. Gibson, and J. G. Grinlinton (lion, secretary). A telegram was received from the (lion, secretary of the Motu Club, suggesting February Ist as the date for the match at Motu. It was deckled to accept the date, and a subcommittee was appointed to make all necessary arrangements for the- trip. The Tokomaru Chib intimated tha: their eleven would visit Gisborne, and play.three matches on January 23rd, 34th-, and 2dtli. It was decided to arrange the matches on exactly the same lines' as when the Motu team played lie re. Mr. Maud;’ brought up Lue question of arranging.an entertainment in aid of the- association’s funds, and ■intimated that Air. Bice-, of the Rico Dramatic Company, had offered to provide -the second part of such entertainment. It was decided to write thanking Mr. Rice for his generous offer, and Air. Maude was empowered to engage His Majesty’s Theatre for the most suitable date. Common, Shelton, and Co.’s Club wrote complaining that their locker had been broken into at Victoria Domain, and a good d-al of gear stolen. In the discussion which ensued several similar complaints wrre made bv (representatives of various clubs, and It- was eventually resolved to place the matter in- the bands of the police. The matter of watering and rolling pitches in the. interval between the two days’ matches was brought tip. and it was decided that the wicket should be prepared for each Saturday’s play. RECORD JIOWMNG AVERAGES. MASTERTON, Jan. 13. Plaving -against ,Carter-ton at Carterton on “Saturday,- Aiasterton Ji were disposed of in the first innings for (J runs. Ten men made ducks, one scored 4 not out, and 2 byes uore run. TV Gallon took six wickets for /me run and Ticohurst four for three. At one period of the innings eight wickets were -down for one -run—-a bye. This is the lowest score made in .senior cricket in the AVa-irarapa, and probably in the Dominion. Carterton made 100, and Master ton B in their second innings made 4/. Garroll took five for six runs and V . Gallon four for five for Carterton.
