GiSBO.II NEITES PLAY A MAGNIFICENT UP-HILL GAME. EVERY MAN SOUND ON THE JACK. KILGOUR “DEADLY AT ALL TIMES.” (Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, January 9. To-day fine weather was again experiened lor the tournamont, and tho interest in the remaining rounds was fully maintained. In tho 10th and 11th round Gisborne won all their games and thus headed B section without a. loss. Hastings was also successful and topped A section. C section contained moro interesting games, finally headed by Carlton without a loss. In this section Turanganui defeated Masterton after a good contest, but had to lower their colors to Greenmeadows. Considering tho youth of Turanganui they had done exceedingly well in securing 4 wins on their debut. They improved with every game, and drew splendidly.
All sectional games were finished by 4 o'clock, when • a great crowd gathered on the Auckland green to witness tho finals. Gisborne drew to play Carlton, and a great game ensued. Carlton drew away at first, and Gisborne, playing an up-hill game, steadily overhauled them, but Carlton kept “their nose” in front to the fiinish. At one point of the game tilings were exceedingly black for Gisborne, Carlton leading them on the aggregate by 20 to 6. At this stage the Turanganuites appeared on the scene and they having met before and defeated Kilgour’s team knew Carlton’s weakness and they accordingly .“tipped the wink” to their fellow townsmen to put Carlton on short heads. This they did with considerable profit, pulling up the leeway from 26 to 8 on the Bth head. They had a fair score to show when the 13tli head was reached, they being then 23 to Carlton’s 26. From this out the game was anybody’s. The play throughout the game was of a high order. Martin played splendid,ly° and througout only made two poor shots. Kilgour was deadly at all times. Again and again he drove and spoilt Martin’s game, but Martin always came again. Hennessy was safe sure and trustworthy as No 3. Ho drew nicely and his firm draws invariably came off. Harris played a splendid game and Eure could not be beaten by bis opponent at leading. Crawford skipped a great ..rame against Wilson (.the latter «s a better player than Kilgmir) and played some .lovely shots. Coleman did well and frequently obtained Ins desires. Robertson was always there, while the genial president of the Gisborne club (W. Pettie) made an excellent lead. At the present time the winning of the Banner as still wen, for should Hastings beat Canton an 1 Gisborne beat Hastings the teams would have to play again in “sudden death” matches, two teams 4rawing and playing and the winner meeting the holder of the bye m the final. Of course if Carlton defeats Hastings to-morrow the championship is theirs. , , „ The Citizens’ Matches are to commence to-day when F. Martins team has a bye, Gaudin’s team meeting Griffn’s, J. Martin’s meeting Powell s and Crawford meeting Smith s
