A record for New Zealand in longdistance pigeon-flying was created in the AA’ellington Homing Society’s raco from Parenga. The birth wwo liberated at Parenga at o o'clock on Monday morning, December 30, and the first bird home, owned by Mr. AV. Bailey, reached AVei ling coil, at half-past three on tho same day. A distance of nearly five hundred miles had thus been covered in ten hours nml a. half. This works out at an average rate of forty-sovor. and a half miles an hour. Notwithstanding the prolonged spell of dry weather, the local iruit crop is well -above the average t-liis season, and tlie quality of some of tlie fruit- is exceptionally good. This is more especially the case in regard to peaches, and some growers maintain that in respect of this particular fruit- tho present season as a record one. Apricots, which are more, suited than ether varieties by the dry and hot weather, are very plentiful, and have been earlier than usual. I - :unis and other stone- fruit trees are bearing well, and give every promise of an abundant crop. Apples aro hardly so good as in previous seasons, having been severely attacked by those dreaded enemies bf fruit-growers silver blight and codlin moth. The latter parasite is very much in evidence this year, much* more so it is stated than formerly, and it is indeed pitiable to see tlie trees laden with apparently good and sound fruit, which on closer examination proves to be practically worthless through the ravages of this pest. Spraying .with different- compounds lias been largely carried out throughout- the district, but judging from results the formula has yet to be discovered which will ensure total immunity from blight, of any kintl.
