THF. QUESTION OF PERMITS

SANITATION OF FACTORIES

In conversation with a ‘‘Times ’ reporter yesterday, Mr. i • R<) " l . < Deputy Chief Inspector of Factonts, stated'that some of the local factoryowners were lax in the matter ot obtainin''' permits for their employees to work overtime. All women, any a ire, and bovs under 10, in lactones, can work overtime, and all persons in shops, of.any.ago, may do so, hut a permit must first bo secured tiom the inspector. They must apply tor it, ami in doing so give the names ot tlio employees required and the number of tho hours work needed, etc. Some employers appear to be rather lax in this respect by posting applications or sending them in, and not obtaining the permit before some 0 1 the work lias been done. 11ns, of course, will not be allowed any longer. The Inspector, Mr. A. Donald, will a 1 wavs be in his office between J and 5 p.in. daily to receive any applications, and can bo seen at other times bv arrangement. . Referring to the sanitation ot the Gisborne factories and shops, Mr. Rowiev says -tint there are ample provisions in the Acts for providing ror sanitation in factories and shops. In regard to places where food made, as there is no proper sanitation here, it appears that the Act cannot be said to be complied with. Respecting conveniences, separate icconiinodatiou must bo provided for males and females.
