The Hauiti Athletic Club held its annual sports meeting at lolaga on New Year’s Day, when a varied programme was successfully carried ou . Tho United Friodiy Societies’ Annual sports anil picnic was held at Fcxtou yesterday, when about a thousand went by rail from Feildini; and about 400 attended from Foxk"‘ DUNEDIN, Jan. 2. Tho forty-sixth annual sports meeting of the Caledonian Society was commenced yesterday. - Tho weather was very favorable, and about 0000 spectators were present. It. Chalmers, with 65 yards start, won tho mile, run in 4tnin 28 l-stli secs, which is the fastest f ine recorded on tho Caledonian track for 16 years, when Connor, of Australia, cut out the milo in a shade better time. A. It. Buchan (9o yards) won the mile walk in 3min 45sec, Deter McColl boing second. F. Wright, from the 18 yards’ mark, won the Dunedin Handicap of 440yds in Glsec, AV. Duff (20vds) being second and A. J. Dunn (15yds) third. A. Bennett won the 120yds hurdles in 19 1-5 sec. The two-milo bicycle raco Was won by C. S. Smith from scratch in 5 minutes, and in the mile Smith was only beaten on tho tape by AV. E. Goodall, the time being 2min 20 4-5 sec. The half-mi'!© run was won by jit. Chalmers from the 25yds mark, with F. AVright (25yds) second, and A. Couling (scratch) third, time 2min 2 2-osec. MASTEBTON, Jan. 2. Tho AVairarapa Caledonian Society’s sports were held yesterday. Osborne 2; mile flat, A. Campbell. A private chopping match, between D. Johnston and J. AVabling, for a side wager of £2O, was won by Watling. INVERCARGILL, Jan. 2. At the Southland Caledonian sports yesterday the attendance was seriously affected by the very windy and stormy weather, the takings at the gate being £222, as compared with £269 last year, and £315 for 1906. The Premier was present. The big sprint event of three distances, 100 yards, 150 yards, and 220 yards, was won by A. Brown, who was first in the 'wo short distances, with J. Batty, who was second in each of the same distances, as runner-up. Neither was placed in tho 220 yards distance. Tho long distance running was affected by the absence of Couling Bros., and the field events similarly lost interest by tho non-appear-ance of Frank Ford, the champion all-round athlete.
