THE SUPPLY OF BREAD.

THE CASH SYSTEM. POSITION OF THE CARTERS. Yesterday tlio new rule recently made by the Master Bakers’ Association, under which no bread is supplied except for cash, came into force. Last night a bread carter pas approached by a “Times” reporter for information as to tlio working of the system. “I have no hesitation,” lie said, “in stating that none of the bakers ever before bad such a big cash day. In the past tlio rule lias been to bring in something like a shilling in cash, or even less to our shop, but to-day well over £lO was brought in. On my round 1 found the majority of the people well disposed towards the now system, and a little argument soon fixed those who wanted to stand out. While everything seems satisfactory, there is one thing which does not seem ns it should be. The new system entails a lot ot work on the carters. Under the old system a certain number of loaves could be left at houses by pre-arranga-ment, making it unnecessary to see the lady of the house; but now we perhaps have to wait while she leaves the wash-tub or any other housework slio may be engaged in and secures the necesarv money or tickets. I am sale in saying that most of the carters yesterday worked thirteen hours or more, though under the Shop Assistants’ Act they cannot bo worked for more than nine hours’ without the payment of overtime.”
